Andy Gray and Scott Torrey (May 1991)
Remembering Andy
Andy was born and raised in Arizona. After graduating from Moon Valley High School in 1987, he set out for Claremont McKenna College. He fully embraced his time at CMC where he majored in economics and government. He was always deeply appreciative of the education that he received and treasured the whole CMC experience. He valued afternoons on the lawn and dinners at the Ath, pick-up basketball and conversations with his professors. He began life-long friendships the very first day he set foot on campus. His years at CMC truly impacted the rest of his life. Shortly after graduating, Andy returned to his native Phoenix. In 1993 he married fellow CMC alum Meredith Phillips '93. They went on to have three children, Ian, Ella, and Quinn. He spent his career in investment banking, finance, and real estate. He was active in his community particularly through coaching youth sports and serving in his church. Andy passed away in 2017 after a nine-month battle with bone cancer.
The Scholarship
In 2021 Andy's good friend and college roommate, Scott Torrey '91 worked with Andy's family and CMC to establish the R. Andrew Gray '91 Endowed Scholarship as a way to honor Andy. The scholarship, which will be awarded to CMC students from Arizona, reflects Andy's passion for CMC and his home state. The first scholarship will be offered in the fall of 2022. The ultimate goal for the fund is to raise one million dollars which will allow a full tuition scholarship to be awarded each year to an Arizona student with financial need.
